Welcome to the Mustech Wiki!

This wiki was begun because of a conversation on the Teachers.net music teachers discussion board.  Some of us decided we'd like a place to share our Smartboard lessons, and perhaps some other resources we use in our classrooms.

The idea behind this wiki is simply to collaborate and share the things that make our classrooms better.  It is not about us, it is about the kids and how to teach them music as effectively as possible!

Social Networking

This is a place to add links to social networking sites that cater to music teachers or teachers interested in technology.

Getting Started With an Interactive Whiteboard

  • White Board Challenge
    • A 14 week project to encourage educators to use and learn about interactive whiteboards.  There are 7 challenges and each one includes some instruction on how to use a given feature on the IWB.  An excellent way to challenge yourself to use the IWB regularly AND learn about all of the things it can do!
  • SmartBoard in the Elementary Music Classroom
    • Here is the handout from a workshop I presented back in November (word document).  Enjoy! (Allison Friedman)
  • SMART Board Basics Class
    • This is a notebook file of an inservice I gave to Houston ISD Music teachers on the SMART Board. (Andy Ramos)

  • Jello in the Bowl - a two-part lesson based on a familiar chant,  for beginning drumming or rhythm activity for K-2.  Includes a composition option and working directly with AABA and ABA forms. You could also change the words to "jelly in the bowl" since some do say the chant that way. (M. Stanley)
  • Fingering Chart Resource Pack - Resource pack with blank basic fingering charts for flute, clarinet, saxophone and three-valved brass instruments.  I use this to create fingering review flip charts. These are basic but you can always have students draw in additional keys!
  • Note Value Practice - A flip chart I created to practice note names and values.  This was in support of a post-assessment I had to do this year so some of the formatting on the third page is specific. My first time using containers!!

I have added the visuals I have created in SmartBoard that work with the GamePlan curriculum series by Jeff Kriske & Randy DeLelles. You will need to have the MusiQwik and MusiSync fonts installed on your computer to read the rhythmic notation. http://www.icogitate.com/~ergosum/fonts/musicfonts.htm

I'd love to check out the Peter and the Wolf smartboard lesson but I can't seem to view it. When I download it to my computer, it comes up as a Microsoft Word file even though it says .notebook at the end. Anyone else having the same trouble?

Beth Jahn said

I do actually have this problem with a few of the files. Weird.

Martha Grondin said

at 5:16 pm on Aug 19, 2008

Tara, it opens alright for me in the Notebook software. I have had that trouble in the past and solved it by choosing "save to disk" instead of "open with..." in the download menu and then manually opening the file with Notebook.

Martha, your Peter & the Wolf notebook is amazing!! Even my husband got into it! :)

I know Tara is adding the 4th grade visuals for Gameplan (and thanks so much for doing that!!), but I needed one for tomorrow, so I threw it together to get me by. It's nothing special since it's the first file I've ever made. It's for the activity "Listen" from Gameplan 4. I also don't know what the real colors are supposed to be since I don't have my big book at home where I am working on my planning. I just tried to upload it, but I'm not sure I was successful. What did I do wrong?

You guys rock! I am so excited to share files and hope we get a bunch more members soon.

I don't yet have a smartboard or the notebook software. Is there a way I can open your lessons to look at w/out notebook??

Martha Grondin said

at 8:02 pm on Sep 1, 2008

Some of the lessons are in Flash format, which you can view in your web browser. Notebook with export as a flash file.

The Notebook software is free, so even if you don't have your board yet you can download it and start looking at things.

I have a bazillion PowerPoint presentations. I'll add some of them as soon as I locate my flash drive. It has been temporarily misplaced while I was on maternity leave. I saw it recently and now I can't put my hands on it again. <insert eye roll here> :)

Do any of you have the SmartBoard speakers that attach to the SmartBoard? I'm wondering if their quality is good or if I should get a set of Bose speakers for my computer.

Sheila Stanton said

at 2:42 pm on Sep 16, 2008

Beth,
I have attached speakers and they work well for me. (There happened to be an extra set that they also mounted in the opposite corners of my room so I have a pseudo surround sound by default but even before those were hooked up I was very happy with the set up & quality).

I've been doing the vocal exploration PPT with K-1's today using hand puppets..they LOVE it!

Betsy Wenger said

at 3:24 pm on Sep 2, 2008

WHen I got my SB last spring, I only had the computer speakers whick were across the room. It drove me crazy. So I put my mic next to the speakers. Now our whole bldg. is getting SB's and the new projectors are being wired into our classroom amplification systems. Unfortunately, we don't have the new projectors yet.

Betsy Wenger said

at 3:28 pm on Sep 2, 2008

Can't wait to try the vocal exploration. I have to print them out for now. Not only do I no longer have the SB hooked up, I do not have th TV connected either (which will be leaving once the SB's are back.) So I'm back to overheads. Blech!

Martha Grondin said

at 3:35 pm on Sep 2, 2008

Yeah, I have vocal exploration cards and it never even occurred to me to do PPT. I love that idea.

Allison Friedman said

at 8:16 pm on Sep 2, 2008

Thanks -- I made them last year and use them 1-4 (with my choruses and for different vocal exploration activities or lessons on pitch). I still don't think that they are that great -- I think of them as the reason why I am music teacher and not the art teacher (the kids always make fun of my artwork, lol).
I still have to use them printed out too -- my SB is attached to the wall and that is about it. However, my principal and I are pressuring the tech people ot have it up and running for our open house next week!

Allison Friedman said

at 8:17 pm on Sep 2, 2008

oh i have the speakers that come with the SB -- i'll let you know how they work once every thing is hooked up (grr so frustrating! all I can do is stare at this wonderful techie tool)

Allison Friedman said

at 7:58 pm on Sep 3, 2008

update -- the smartboard is all hooked up -- cept the powerblock for the speakers is missing, but everything else works -- which rocks!

Beth Jahn said

What happens when we run out of space? I have so many powerpoints, but I don't want to eat up all our space with them.

Martha Grondin said

at 9:21 pm on Sep 3, 2008

We will have to start hosting things elsewhere and linking to them. I host most of my files on my own webspace. If you have an edublog you can upload files there. I can also put files on my webspace if you e-mail them to me.

The PPT's are really a nice thing simply because people are more accustomed to PPT than they are to the Notebook software.

Beth Jahn said

Does anyone use the SB to keep track of students who've had turns on instruments or for games? If so, how does it work? I'm trying to think this through and see if there is an effective way to do that where I can avoid having to type kids names in all the time, but can save if we have to quit a game before the class period is up. I wonder if I could use a template with all their names for each class and just do a 'save as' for each game. Anyone have thoughts about this?

Martha Grondin said

at 9:07 am on Sep 8, 2008

What about having students write their name into a Paint file (or something similar) that you can save until the next lesson?

Beth Jahn said

Another problem: Is anyone using a Mac and Finale? We installed Finale and also the fonts that are required for the Gameplan visuals Tara made. Suddenly my computer wouldn't open any notebook files. We don't know if Finale was the problem of if the fonts were the problem. We had to reimage my computer to get it functional again. I really use Finale a lot, so I hope we can get this figured out. Anyone else have a conflict with those programs? Any thoughts?

Tara Hutchison said

at 8:24 pm on Sep 9, 2008

Yikes, Beth! I hope it wasn't the fonts that created this problem - or Finale for that matter. I haven't had an issue...but I also don't have Finale on my computer. Sorry I'm not much help!

Allison Friedman said

at 8:11 pm on Sep 12, 2008

I have the notebook software, finale, and the musicsync fonts on both my home computer (macbook pro) and my school computer (mac mini) that is hooked up to the smart board and I have had no problems whatsoever. Might have been a weird bug? What version of Finale? Sometimes the mac versions of finale are buggy too (had lots of problems with 2007, but 2008 is working fine). It's also possible the software just got corrupted somehow -- shouldn't be cause of the programs or the fonts though.

My SmartBoard arrived today! I'm so excited! No idea when they plan on installing it though. My question is - my colleagues received SmartBoards recently and they did not receive the connector you need for your laptop to communicate with the SmartBoard. Do you have any idea where I would get this and how much it would cost? I'm shocked my school doesn't provide it...

Allison Friedman said

at 7:42 pm on Sep 15, 2008

Mine didn't come with it either -- luckily our school supplies it. All you need is a VGA cable -- can get it from any computer store. I don't think they are too expensive (but they aren't very long). You have to make sure your computer will be close to where the smart board is. I know they had to rearrange my whole classroom because my computer desk was on the other side of the room. Btw did you enjoy the Denise Gagne workshop?

Tara Hutchison said

Thanks Ally!

She had some fun things- she offered lots of material and free samples. I just felt bad for her - people were so rude.

Allison Friedman said

I agree -- I think I saw you there...but got to hectic at the end and I never made my way over to say hi. It was a fun workshop -- even though some rather sit in the back and talk or play with their dog...

I just added a solfege ladder that I am using. It's nothing fancy. It's just pieces that can be moved around as necessary. If I'm using only sol mi la with a group, I'd move the others off to the side. I eventually plan to do one that has the hand signs too, but just haven't had the time yet.

Where is everyone? I'm feeling lonely without SmartBoard chatter. :) Does anyone know if I can change the default size of the eraser? It takes forever to erase and I hate having to take the step to change the eraser size to a bigger choice.

Phyllis said

at 11:35 pm on Sep 20, 2008

Try this: with the eraser, completely circle the perimeter of the area to be erased, and then touch the eraser once in the middle of the circled ared. Hope that helps.

Betsy Wenger said

at 3:21 pm on Sep 19, 2008

GO to help and look up erase. It's under "change eraser settings." You'll be told to go to the control panel. I don't have much to contribute right now because my technology is limited to my ipod. I don't even have a video card to hook my computer to the tv. The company that bid for the projectors has until Dec. 31 to install them. :(

Does anyone have the powerpoints to MusicPlay? What grade levels? How are they?

Beth Jahn said

at 8:55 am on Sep 23, 2008

Thanks for the eraser tip. It works great and the kids think it is super cool. :)

I have not seen the MusicPlay PowerPoints. Have you contacted Denise Gagne at Theme and Variations? I wonder if she would be willing to send you a sample of one. She's usually really good about things like that.

Beth Jahn said

Hee Hee. I'm almost giddy. My principal just sent me an email that she ordered me a scanner and wireless keyboard for use with my SmartBoard. She heard me talking about wanting to scan some things in to use on the SB. She is so good to me! :)

Allison Friedman said

Ok... I could use some advice. I have to present a lesson using my Smart Board for the people who gave me the grant to purchase it. However, I was just told that the head of technology and the superintendent and other big admins will be coming as well because supposedly the computer teacher and the technology staff developer have really talked me up (and all the cool things I can do with it). I am lost to what to do. I have been using the board in almost all my classes -- but now I need a really good lesson (for any grade level, I didn't set a date/time yet) that really shows the cool interactive ways to use the SB in my music class (I also would love to incorporate garageband or some of the many interactive websites out there too).

Any ideas? What is a lesson or topic that could "wow" an audience (and prove that it is worthy to have a SB in a music classroom)

Martha Grondin said

at 9:58 pm on Sep 27, 2008

My advice is to pick a lesson you have done before and are comfortable and familiar with (you will be stressed enough!) Make sure the students are manipulating objects on the SB, showing off he interactive element. Remember they are coming to see you because the things you are ALREADY doing are worth seeing. You don't have to set off fireworks, just show them what you are doing!

Since you mentioned GB I have always wanted to do some composing/arranging in Garage Band using the built in loops and some simple student-composed rhythms or melodies. Too bad I teach pre-k all day!

Andy Ramos said

at 10:46 pm on Sep 27, 2008

I agree with Martha on lesson. I use GB w rhythm instruments(hand drums). I put several rhythm cards on smartboard, students play rhythm w a groove playing on gb. They love playing w different grooves.

Allison Friedman said

at 12:39 pm on Sep 28, 2008

Andy, that might be a good idea. I already have had some classes write songs using loops for fun (showing off the SB during the first week of school), the problem was that not every kid got to participate since once you add too many loops, it gets painful really quickly. But the drumming might be good, since I do a drum circle unit with my 5th graders already. I did do a quick demo of GB loops for my principal when he came in to see the board the first week of school and he thought it was the "coolest thing ever."

For some reason, this website tries to alter the web address of the site, so it doesn't work. I just posted the link in plain text, you will have to copy and paste it. Sorry for the error, didn't notice that it didn't work the other night.

I just posted 2 new notebook files. I hosted them on my own webspace -- however I had to compress them (turn them into .zip ) because when i tested downloading them some weird stuff happened. Let me know if they download okay or if weird stuff is still happening, I can always figure out another method of hosting.

Has anyone used the pitch explorer from the gallery? Do a search for it in the gallery and you'll find it. Are some of the intervals not quite right or is it just me?

Thanks Beth! I so enjoy making those visuals! How are they working out for you? Have you used any of them- particularly those that you manipulate?

SmartBoard is ALIVE and well today! They finally got me the hookups so we're set and ready to go. Only thing is- when they came to hook it up they got their dirty hands on the board - there's three very lovely dark smudges on it. Any idea on how to clean it?

Also, the speakers aren't working. Is there a step I'm missing? Thanks!

Made some more changes to GamePlan grades 3 and 4. I realized I did not create the BAGED cards so I've added those to Grade 4, and I've moved the little 'stick figure' cards around so that they're each on one page.

I hope this is the last of my edits! :) Let me know if you have any comments - things that aren't working, what can be improved, what kinds of things you've done....thanks!

Allison Friedman said

at 8:47 pm on Oct 8, 2008

I had a problem with the speakers as well. Theres a few things to troubleshoot.
(1) Make sure the USB cable from the speakers is connected to the computer (should be a usb cable for the board and for the speakers)
(2) Make sure the power cord is actually in -- I had a problem where it was plugged in but not fully plugged in. Check for a bright green light by the speakers, not a dull one. Once we jiggled the power cord, we got it to work. heard its a problem with the new speakers (loose power cord)
(3) Make sure you computer has all the drivers installed....and if you are using a Mac -- go into system preferences, and sound, and make sure USB audio is working.

if you can get your speakers to work -- the temporary solution I had was to connect my computer's speaker/headphone output to my stereo system -- that worked fine, til we figured out the faulty power cord issue.

Tara Hutchison said

Thanks Ally- all I had to do was change the system preferences. WOW the sound is amazing! No need for stereo or my iPod. I LOVE IT. Had so much fun with my first day on the SmartBoard. 5th graders did a unit on GarageBand, but that was done in the lab. I can't even express how much I love this thing! I need to come up with even MORE ways to use it. That's why this wiki is so great- keep contributing everyone!

Is there a sleep setting somewhere? I do notice eventually the screen saver comes on and then the SmartBoard screen goes blue. Any tips on how to set it to sleep? Thanks!

Betsy Wenger said

Yes, turn off the projector whenever possible. Our tech said it is not a problem to turn it on and off even it is just for 10 or 15 minutes. I have 35 minute classes and will turn it on and off in every class if necessary. The official word is no projectors until after Christmas. The good news is, the 3-5 teacher has one now. Beth Jahn said

I think we should start one, but I'm not sure how to do it. I'm looking into doing this with Moodle. We could have forums or Wikis for SmartBoards, Promethan Boards, etc. I love this wiki, but we are going to eventually run out of space for sharing stuff. Let me check with the people who run the Moodle I'm involved in and see if we can do that. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I had a demonstration of the Promethean equipment today and I learned something that might be of interest to you. Apparently Active Studio will import SMART Notebook files. The sales guy said it imports fairly well, but he was a sales guy.

I'm jealous you have a Promethean board, after the demonstration I think they are pretty clearly superior to the other IWB's I have used.

Martha Grondin said

at 3:58 pm on Dec 1, 2008

I'm not aware of anything specifically targeted at Promethean IWB users. We could certainly host any kind of IWB file here, although most of us are Smartboard-oriented. Perhaps if you start posting your Promethean files and talk it up amongst other Promethean users you can draw some of that traffic!

As we get more different types of files (and just more files period) I have considered breaking the frontpage up and creating different pages that are specific to a grade-level or file type. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

Before this lesson, we do a little play party thing I learned at a workshop years ago. Formation: Single Circle with partners facing one another. Bow wow wow (three steps in place), Whose dog art thou? (Shake finger at partner), Little Tommy Tucker's dog (hold partners hand and turn half circle to trade places), Bow wow wow (three steps in place then jump, turn half turn, and clap simultaneously so that the kids end up facing a new partner). Clear as mud?

Ann, I know that Promethean/Activboard training is available online at Prometheanplanet.com. Free for the first basic lessons. Then you can get more training for $$.
If you're using a smartboard ( a real smartboard, not a white board called a smart board but it's really another brand), then consider going to the smart site and seeing what is available online there.
You might also find good video training on TeacherTube and YouTube. Ya never know!!

Hi, Everyone, thanks for this resource!

I have some questions.

Is there a "click here" kind of attendance chart I can create for the smartboard? Sometime this week, I will have a Smartboard installed
Attendance is my bane with only 25 minute classes and pullouts for speech, etc. Very easy for me to fill grades and give a student a grade for days not in class.

Can all IWB's use *.flp files or is every machine completely different? (I had a class this summer but it was a Promethean Board workshop.)

How do I get the notebook software for my home computer so that I can work at home on lessons?
Thanks!

Martha Stanley said

at 6:00 pm on Mar 15, 2009

Okay - Chris Ann, is it a smartboard or an activboard? They're different brands, different software.
If you have activboard (AB) and the activotes (clickers), you could have each kid click in and it would go straight to your puter.
The Smart software and clickers should also do the same thing.
You're gonna have to open the file for each class and set the computer for which kid is using clicker 3 every time (unless there's a default) which shouldn't take too long PLUS getting the clickers and putting them up, but it's just as easy to grab your paper and put a dot next to every kid's name..... and will take about as much time, maybe less.

Otherwise, the best I can think of are these ideas:
Make an Excel spreadsheet for every class and open it from your flipchart, using your pen to mark who's present. That's not any faster than doing it by hand AND there's the little problem of every kid seeing what you're writing. That might be okay if you're only doing attendance and not marking assessments or comments.
The other idea is to make a grid-like sheet on a flipchart and duplicate it for every class, filling in their names at your puter to start with. This idea sounds ponderous to me...... but it could work, I guess.

Martha Stanley said

at 6:03 pm on Mar 15, 2009

Notebook software is for Smartboards.
Flipchart software is for Activboards.
Go to the respective sites to download the software and see if your techie has a license number you can use. Otherwise, you will likely need to download solely the viewer which will not let you create flps or notebooks.

PK-5 Music Teacher said

I am excited. It looks like my Activboard is finally working.

Do you use Computer speakers to amplify the sounds the students hear, or do you connect the whiteboard and computer to your stereo system? If so, how?

If you use an mp3 player or ipod with the whiteboard/computer combo, do you hook it through the computer, the stereo, the speakers or some other way?

Really want to get rid of my TV sets in classroom (converting VHS to DVD is next!)

Thanks for ideas or tips!

I'm still looking for a click here attendance solution....flipchart, (I can convert notebook files)...anyone have one?

Martha Stanley said

I have re-uploaded GamePlan 4 - I discovered while teaching today (isn't that always the way?) that there were some notation mistakes in "Lullaby." By the way, that lesson is just gold. It sounded so beautiful. I also discovered earlier on some notation mistakes in "Follow the Drinking Gourd." My apologies! I also created a new page for 1st grade that wasn't there before - "Which Instrument Do You Hear?" #2. So GamePlan 1 has been re-uploaded as well.

How do you add to the clipart library for an activ board? I don't always want to import every single picture I use!

Martha Stanley said

at 4:52 pm on Mar 15, 2009

There's good news and bad news...... There really isn't a clipart gallery, but there are collections of artwork that are in what is called "resource packs." There are a lot of them on Promethean Planet, free.

Bad news: on activprimary, it's a royal pain and has forced me to do my IWB design in activstudio.
Good news: on activstudio, you just navigate to your own picture or graphics file and bring it in.

However - you can put your own favorite images into "My Collections" easily.

Martha Stanley said

at 7:28 pm on Mar 15, 2009

Also.... right now for a limited time, Promethean Planet has a special focus on its music offering. Go there and get all the free downloads available - they're always available, but right now they're all collected into one spot and it's a lot easier!
The DK Eyewitness Music resource pack has great pictures of various world instruments in it. It's $7.50 plus like 30 cents from Europe tax regs..... DK is a British firm.

When I try to open Peter and the Wolf it attempts to open in Word. If I open my Notebook software and then open the file manually from there it is fine.

Some other folks have said that they have to add the .notebook file extension to get it to open, and then it is OK.

Hope that helps!!

I'd love to be able to thank the creator(s) BUT there are several submissions that just say "I did this" or "I did that" and never is "I" identified here on the wiki or on the notebooks/flipcharts themselves. So I don't know who to credit and/or thank. Maybe we should all give ourselves credit on the wiki and on the cover page of the notebook/flipchart itself? That's my suggestion, anyway.

And while I'm here - it's probably appropriate to consider the copyright issues inherent in including sound files in the submissions...........

I'd like to be able to see a "CD" icon, but right now I get the iTuens mp3 image or an arrow. (I use the add link option, then choose sound file so far).
I have many powerpoints that are really great, but I cannot sync them very well with both Activ and iTunes running (for instance, MK8's Rap of the States.

Would love any tips...

Carol Broos said

You have to "enable" the sound. I will look at one of my flip-charts today and get the EXACT steps. It does work!

Martha Stanley said

at 7:47 am on Apr 16, 2009

There is no CD icon. You can do two other things, though.
First is to make the title or image an action so that you click on the title (or image) and it will open your sound file for you. This is a very clean method, imo.
Or
you can put the sound file itself in "My Sounds" in your resource library, where it will be displayed as a little icon megaphone thing. That avenue is annoying because in the resource library you can't tell which icon it is---- all sounds display as the same icon. But it works - you just drag the icon onto your page. If you can figure out which one it is......

I haven't figured out how to "sync" automatically the music and the page turns for a song. I'm thinking you'd have to put in an action button with a timer. What a pain. It's easier to just turn the page at the board or have a kid do it OR if you have a slate-thingee, use that. I want one of those really badly. Kid power is a lot easier and they love doing it.

I look forward to reading perhaps another way as per Carol's instructions!

This is the kind of ball they were using for the Koosh Ball activity I posted today: http://www.amazon.com/Toysmith-Puffer-Ball/dp/B000ICXLXI/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1250729007&sr=8-8

Tara, have you considered adding a Table of Contents page to your GamePlan files? You could list the pages and then link to them. It elimates having to scroll through the file since it is so long? I'm planning to do this with some of my longer files too.

I was just looking through all the files we've posted and I'm thinking we should start adding our name next to the files we upload. That way people can contact (or give credit to) the person who created the file if needed.

You probably already know this, but I just learned about it today, so I'm sharing it with you in case you don't know. If you don't have speakers on your SMART Board, but you have an FM System in your room (mine is Audio Enhancement), you can hook your computer to your FM system so that your computer sound comes out of the speakers in your room. I assume you can do the same thing with your stereo system. All I needed was an audio cable with the male red/white ends on one side and the standard headphone thingy (1/8" I think) on the other. The red/white ends connected to my FM system and the other one went into the headphone input of my computer. Clear as mud? It's so neat. Now I can embed sound files in my notebook files and the kids will actually be able to hear them. Woo hoo!

Added some SB lessons for kindergarten. Working on some 2nd and 4th grade this week and whenever I get my Musicplay 1 -- then 1st grade as well.

Grrrr. I'm having sound problems. Can anyone help me? I'm trying to link a sound file to an object in Smart Notebook. It seems to link successfully, but when I click on it to try it out, it plays for 5 seconds or so and then stops. What am I doing wrong? I'm using an .mp3 file by the way.

Allison Friedman said

Beth, I am having the same problem. I found that full mp3s work and ones that I have shortened/edited don't work!

Just double checked to find out if size of clips matters -- my old "I Wish" notebook file and one I made for Peter & the Wolf that had short clips -- works fine. However the new one I was making today doesn't work. I wonder if it is the new software -- you can't use clips in the new version?

Allison Friedman said

Beth, are you on a Mac... and if so, did you upgrade to Snow Leopard? It seems, for me, at least it is a compatibility issue between Snow Leopard and the new Notebook software. When I used my old powerbook (also with the upgraded notebook software) it worked fine -- and then the file played fine on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Must be a weird bug. I have sent an e-mail to the support at SmartTech.

Hey there! I am new to this site. I just got my SB a few days ago. I uploaded a file I made for "Engine, Engine Number 9" I do not know how to put information next to the title - any help? Anyway, the pages come in sets of 2, the first is just the plain train cars to represent sol and mi, the 2nd page will play the pitches when the cars are touched. The last page has traditional notation which plays when touched. I just downloaded a TON of stuff from this site and am glad I finally get to share something.

I just added my first files, hopefully they will come through. Can anyone tell me why some of my files show up in the gray color meaning I can't upload them?

Cathy Bruce said

at 12:55 am on Sep 7, 2009

Sorry, my last comment isn't very clear. I had a lot of files show up gray so that I couldn't use them when I got to the first step for uploading them. Some are in black type and work just fine, but I can't seem to see any reason why some show up gray and some show up black. Anyone know why?

Added a bunch of new files as well as a .zip file of a bunch of font files -- the 3 main music ones and some other fun ones that I have used in my files.

Beth Jahn said

Allison~ Yes. I was using a Mac. Now I'm working on my PC laptop at home and linking sound files seems to be working. I was trying to link files I created through Finale, so they weren't clips though.

Beth Jahn said

Tari~ I think you uploaded your file, but didn't put the link on the frontpage. To do that, you need to click on the edit tab at the top left of this page.

I haven't really checked out these applications yet, but they look awesome. http://www.themusicinteractive.com/TMI/The_Music_Interactive_-_Classroom_Apps_(2).html. Most are free programs.

I didn't find the applications from my Sept. 22 posting to be nearly as good as they initially looked, but that's life. Here is another list of websites that may be useable. Again, I haven't really looked at them yet. http://www.whiteboardblog.co.uk/2009/07/11-ideas-for-music-lessons-on-your-interactive-whiteboard/

I'm trying to create a SB file for John Brown's Baby. I want the kids to be able to click on the picture icon for a word and have it disappear or an X go over it or something to show that it's time to leave that word out. Any thoughts on how to do this? I'd like to do the same kind of thing with the song Bingo, but I'm having trouble figuring out a cool way to make this work so that the page is interactive and the kids can be involved.

Martha Grondin said

at 2:04 pm on Mar 24, 2010

The simple way would be to have a solid-colored square (or a background-colored square with an X on it) as an infinite cloner and the kids could pick one up and drag it over the word that you want to cover.

When I did the cards for the Peter and the Wolf matching game I did them in Flash. That kind of touch-and-change move is pretty simple in Flash if you are familiar with it already.

Beth Jahn said

I love your Peter and the Wolf game. I'm not familiar with Flash. Do you have a good site or book to recommend that would help me learn it?

Adobe offers some video tutorials that are pretty good in my opinion: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/about.html

Cathy Bruce said

Beth, As far as your SB file for John Brown's Baby - if you don't need to touch your picture icons until you want them to disappear, you can use object animation with them and have them fade out or fly off the page. I think it would even work to put a shape over them, send it to the front and set it to fade in when the area is touched. Otherwise, Martha's idea of dragging a shape over the icons would work well if you want to be able to touch the icons without them disappearing.

Martha Grondin said

at 9:36 am on Mar 25, 2010

That's cool Cathy, how do you do the object animation?

Cathy Bruce said

at 6:21 pm on Mar 25, 2010

Click on your object to select/highlight it and go to properties using either the pull down menu or the properties button. You should see object animation listed as one of the choices. Select it and then you will have a menu that lets you select the type of animation you want, the direction (if it has a direction), the speed, when it happens (when you enter the page or when you click on the object) and whether it repeats. Kids find the animation a lot of fun-it's a time when you might even get some "aahs"! Have fun.

Beth Jahn said

Thanks Cathy and Martha. I got a file that I think will work (using animation). It's not fancy, but it does the job. I'll post it in a few minutes.

I'm sorry guys, we are having a problem with spam comments on this page. I delete them as they come up but many of you are probably getting annoying notification emails about them. I am looking for a better solution.

I love all these lessons and activities and first would like to thank you for posting them for all of us to see. My question is about the Major/minor notebook pages. I'm having trouble with the vortex game. I've used it in the past and haven't had trouble but the songs are not dragging into the vortexes well. Any ideas for me to troubleshoot? I've tried restarting my computer, tried re-downloading the notebook file. Just wondering...

Thanks!

Theresa Schmidt said

Actually...when I hit the button to enlarge it to full screen is when I'm having problems with the dragging.

Allison Friedman said

at 11:00 pm on Jan 14, 2011

Hi. I made the major/minor game and with the latest updates to the notebook software I have had a lot of issues with the game as well. Last year, nothing would drag and the file would freeze and then abruptly quit.... I do have to say with the latest update, it worked better when I used it this past Tuesday. It made me "edit" the game before I could use it. That's the thing too -- mac/full screen. I hate that smarttech can't get their software to work well on macs!

Cathy Bruce said

Theresa, At my school we have found that some of the gallery activities won't work in full screen on a Mac. The vortex is one that I have had trouble with in full screen.

Hey everyone, I'm looking to get a presentation remote with a laser pointer. Martha Stanley told me all about hers but it's a little pricey for me. Does anyone use one with their Smartboards, particularly with notebook files? I don't use powerpoint much at all. Any recommendations? Thanks!
