Perpich Center for the Arts

The Interactive Whiteboard as a Teaching and Learning Tool in the K-12 Music Classroom: Activities, Curriculum, and Assessment

The Perpich Center for the Arts in Golden Vally, MN, hosted an Interactive Whiteboard workshop for music educators on July 27, 2009.

Here are some of the files I presented for lower elementary SmartBoard actvities.

Enjoy and remember to share yours too!

Files from Becky Litzau - Perpich 2009 Summer Workshop

First Day of Music - SB Tips.notebook - Great to use when introducing the entire student body to the SMART Board.

Bells & Boomwhackers.notebook - General shapes to write simple compositions using color-coded hand bells and boomwhackers.

Halloween Activities.notebook - A ton of fun Halloween songs/poems/activities!

Whether the Weather.notebook - Idea taken from University of St. Thomas Orff Level I from Cindy Hall (2007).  Uses moveable shapes to assign body percussion and non-pitched instruments to the poem.

Files from Midge Olsen

Dynamics Vortex.notebook (Cathy Bruce) - This is just a simple game for sorting dynamic markings into loud and soft. Correct answers are "swallowed" by the vortex while incorrect answers are thrown back out again. I have had some problems using this with full screen, but it seems to be okay if I leave it as it comes up.

Fossils.notebook  (Cathy Bruce) - I used this with Fossils from Carnival of Animals. On the first page we patted the A rhythm on our legs following the bones. We moved notes to show the rhythm on the second page. The B section has stars for the "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" melody which we sang and then everyone improvised their own rhythm for the C section. We had already figured out the form in an earlier lesson, so we finished this lesson by patting, singing and improvising as we listened to the whole piece.

Orchestra Instruments.notebook (Cathy Bruce) - This is a review that I used with my 1st grades after we studied the families of the orchestra. I also used it as a quick review with my 2nd and 3rd grades.

Koosh Rhythms 2.notebook (Cathy Bruce) Beth's koosh rhythms file inspired me to do one that included half note and sixteenth note patterns.

Hi Becky,

I'm so glad you started a new page for this. Our FrontPage is getting long. Maybe if other presenters from the Perpich workshop join the site, they can share their files on this page too. Can't wait until you post the Notebook pages! Thanks so much.

I was at the workshop as well and am really excited to work with this website. I will post some ideas that I have used/made when I find out from my "techie" husband how to add the files. :-) Looking forward to seeing and using some great new ideas!

Becky, can others of us who were at the IWB workshop upload files to this page or should we use the main page?

I think it would be best to keep the Perpich stuff on this page. Our front page is getting really long.

Not quite sure how this site works. I uploaded a file, see it under "recent activity" but not anywhere else. Does it get placed by someone else? The comments beside the files on the front page are very helpful. Can we do that on this page, and how do our files show up on this page?

Midge, if you want your files to show up on the page you have to click the "edit" tab in the upper left hand corner of the page. In edit mode you can edit the page just like a word processor and add a link to the file you uploaded.

I wrote a little step by step explanation for someone awhile back, you can access it by clicking this link: http://docs.google.com/View?id=d7h5tpn_110hjtn9qg6

Sorry, it looks like the link isn't clickable but if you copy and paste it into the address bar on your browser (being sure to copy the whole thing, including what extends onto the second line) you can view the file.

Midge,
You are more than welcome to share anything you like on this page! I know you've got a ton of great ideas! Did you figure out the uploading? Email me if you need help. Maybe we could call each other and figure it out! It took me a while to figure it out too!

Hi Ladies,

Out of habit (and because I was in a huge hurry) I uploaded a new file I created on the front page. Not sure if I should leave it there or move it over here. It's a Koosh Ball rhythm activity. It's appropriate for second semester 1st graders or as a review for 2nd graders. I hope to make some more for the upper grades soon. My computer is in for repair, so I have to wait until it comes back. :( I hope a few other people from the Perpich workshop start sharing some files too.

Beth,
I used your koosh ball activity with my 2nds yesterday as a rhythm review. They LOVED it! THANK YOU!

Yay! I'm so glad to hear it worked well. I can't wait to try it out this fall. Thanks for the feedback, Anne.
