Welcome to the Mustech Wiki!

This wiki was begun because of a conversation on the Teachers.net music teachers discussion board.  Some of us decided we'd like a place to share our Smartboard lessons, and perhaps some other resources we use in our classrooms.

The idea behind this wiki is simply to collaborate and share the things that make our classrooms better.  It is not about us, it is about the kids and how to teach them music as effectively as possible!

Social Networking

This is a place to add links to social networking sites that cater to music teachers or teachers interested in technology.

Getting Started With an Interactive Whiteboard

  • White Board Challenge
    • A 14 week project to encourage educators to use and learn about interactive whiteboards.  There are 7 challenges and each one includes some instruction on how to use a given feature on the IWB.  An excellent way to challenge yourself to use the IWB regularly AND learn about all of the things it can do!
  • SmartBoard in the Elementary Music Classroom
    • Here is the handout from a workshop I presented back in November (word document).  Enjoy! (Allison Friedman)

Smartboard Lessons

As I have used these files, I've noticed some errors and have fixed them. Feel free to contact me if you notice any others. **Please note that you need to download three different types of fonts to view the rhythmic and melodic notation (more information is provided on the first page of each file).** Grade 5 has now been added! I have not had a chance to use it, so if you've had any trouble, run into any errors- please let me know!

There is no CD icon. You can do two other things, though.
First is to make the title or image an action so that you click on the title (or image) and it will open your sound file for you. This is a very clean method, imo.
Or
you can put the sound file itself in "My Sounds" in your resource library, where it will be displayed as a little icon megaphone thing. That avenue is annoying because in the resource library you can't tell which icon it is---- all sounds display as the same icon. But it works - you just drag the icon onto your page. If you can figure out which one it is......

I haven't figured out how to "sync" automatically the music and the page turns for a song. I'm thinking you'd have to put in an action button with a timer. What a pain. It's easier to just turn the page at the board or have a kid do it OR if you have a slate-thingee, use that. I want one of those really badly. Kid power is a lot easier and they love doing it.

I look forward to reading perhaps another way as per Carol's instructions!

I know this has been discussed but I can't find it.....on my presentations I always have a gray column of space on each side of my document, I know there is a way to take it off but I can't remember. Thanks

I need to undo an "oops" with my sound file. Activ board

The sound file is stored in the flipchart.
I changed where it is in iTunes but cannot redirect the link or even delete it from the flipchart. I may reload the lesson....but it seems like there could be a way to at least remove the sound file.
ideas, anyone?

Hey everyone, I wanted to update all of the GamePlan smartboard files as I was just alerted to the fact that a link was out of date. I deleted all four files so that I could replace them...and now I can't upload the new files! Is anyone else having trouble uploading new documents to the wiki? Thanks!

that is weird Tara. My first thought was that we ran out of space but it looks like we have over a gig available. Perhaps PBwiki is having some trouble atm and they will have it working again soon?

I just tried to upload a file, too, and it won't work. :( I have a map I'm using so students can find their places for Mallet Madness I was going to share. It won't be useful to anyone else as it is, but maybe you can use the pieces to create something for your room to show students where instruments belong or something of that nature. When we figure out how to upload again, I'll share it with all of you.

It seems like it might be time to start breaking the Front Page into multiple pages. I was noticing this morning that its getting a little tedious to scroll so much!

I was thinking initially we might divide into pages for: SmartBoard Files, Flipchart Files, Links of Interest and PowerPoint Files.

Anyone have any thoughts? Should we divide further?

I was going to say "activboard" files but then you did list flipcharts...

Is there any way to have the comments higher up on the page? Or create a question section that is more visible? I know that we learn most by trial and error---I was just hoping I could avoid redundantly repeating history while I am doing this

I don't see anyway to move the comment section, but we could create a FAQ page where people ask questions and others edit to offer answers.

Hey all! I want to create a page where I have boxes on a page with words, and if a kid clicks on the box, it disappears, then reappears when they click it again. I have a feeling I've seen something like this. Does anyone have a clue what I'm talking about or know a SmartBoard technique on how to do this?

Thanks!!

Tara, the only way I know to do that with Notebook is to move a solid box over and reveal what is behind it.

You could do it in flash though, if you have any interest in learning to do that.

Tara, have you considered adding a Table of Contents page to your GamePlan files? You could list the pages and then link to them. It elimates having to scroll through the file since it is so long? I'm planning to do this with some of my longer files too.

You probably already know this, but I just learned about it today, so I'm sharing it with you in case you don't know. If you don't have speakers on your SMART Board, but you have an FM System in your room (mine is Audio Enhancement), you can hook your computer to your FM system so that your computer sound comes out of the speakers in your room. I assume you can do the same thing with your stereo system. All I needed was an audio cable with the male red/white ends on one side and the standard headphone thingy (1/8" I think) on the other. The red/white ends connected to my FM system and the other one went into the headphone input of my computer. Clear as mud? It's so neat. Now I can embed sound files in my notebook files and the kids will actually be able to hear them. Woo hoo!

Just double checked to find out if size of clips matters -- my old "I Wish" notebook file and one I made for Peter & the Wolf that had short clips -- works fine. However the new one I was making today doesn't work. I wonder if it is the new software -- you can't use clips in the new version?

Beth, are you on a Mac... and if so, did you upgrade to Snow Leopard? It seems, for me, at least it is a compatibility issue between Snow Leopard and the new Notebook software. When I used my old powerbook (also with the upgraded notebook software) it worked fine -- and then the file played fine on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Must be a weird bug. I have sent an e-mail to the support at SmartTech.

Hey there! I am new to this site. I just got my SB a few days ago. I uploaded a file I made for "Engine, Engine Number 9" I do not know how to put information next to the title - any help? Anyway, the pages come in sets of 2, the first is just the plain train cars to represent sol and mi, the 2nd page will play the pitches when the cars are touched. The last page has traditional notation which plays when touched. I just downloaded a TON of stuff from this site and am glad I finally get to share something.
